Units II and III are available in the full manual, Teaching Your Children to Read Using the Book of Mormon, which is available through LDS bookstores, the BYU Bookstore, and directly from Metra Publishing by calling 801-521-8593.

Unit II - Basic Reading

This unit consists of twelve chapters. The basic letter sounds are reviewed and the children are provided extensive practice reading words phonetically. They learn to pronounce twenty-three names and read eighty common sight words instantaneously. They read twelve selections that deal with Lehi and his followers.

Unit III - Advanced Reading

Once children complete the chapters in Unit II, they are ready to begin the chapters in this unit. The twenty chapters in this unit are designed to teach children the skills required to read the Book of Mormon independently. They are taught to blend a consonant sound with other consonant sounds, read words that end with suffixes, read words that involve phonetic rules, read words that have common endings, read multiple syllable words, and make use of contextual clues. They are provided extensive practice reading names from the Book of Mormon. They begin reading from the Book of Mormon on a regular basis as well as reading sentences and selections provided in the chapters.

Comments from Parents

These materials have been proven effective in teaching reading, especially the Book of Mormon. Here are some comments from parents who have used Dr. Harrison's reading materials.

"Our son was tested and evaluated for his reading abilities. The results were very discouraging. The "professionals" weren't certain if he would ever be an adequate reader. That is when we made the decision to take him out of public school and I began home schooling. I purchased numerous programs, curriculum, videos, games, manuals, etc. and I was getting nowhere. Until I found the reading manuals written by Grant Von Harrison. Our favorite has been "Teaching Your Child to Read Using the Book of Mormon". The Book of Mormon is "magic". It is very phonetic and repetitive which helps to build their self confidence. When all others books seem impossible for our son, he is able and willing to read the Book of Mormon. My son just turned 15 and has read the Book of Mormon twice and is near completion for the third time. I will forever be grateful to Grant Von Harrison and his curriculum. He literally saved our son from a life of pain and criticism."
